I too have experienced many of the symptoms you highlighted, talk about deja-vu. I have thought for some time that Win2K remains far superior to XP. I do in fact still think that there was nothing wrong with NT4 (Workstation and Server), but particularly server. I'm of the opinion that the majority of small businesses do not need Active Directory, and that the old NT4 domain structure would more than suffice. I know of at least one large company over here in the UK that is still relying on NT4 servers, although an upgrade to W2k3 is imminent.
