File Typing
Date: 22/5/2003
Well now that I use Scribe-Linux day to day, some of the more extended functionality other than just "send mail" and "receive mail" is comming into play. Little niceties like double clicking an attachment and having it open in the program associated with the file's type. Well I was hoping I could do that, but it seems after all these years Linux still doesn't have the breathtaking simplicity of BeOS when it comes to typing your files.

It seems to me that the current method for getting a file's MIME type is calling file(1) and hoping for the best:
linux% file -i /tmp/JuneJuly03.xls
file: Using regular magic file `/usr/share/magic.mime'
/tmp/JuneJuly03.xls: data
Riiiiiight, mime type = "data", it doesn't even have a slash in it!!!

There are people who are solving the problem but not many distros have picked up the crusade yet. If only KDEand Gnome would join hands and collect common code/data/config into the same place. Esp when it comes down to user settings. When the user wants 'X' set as a preference, I doubt they care whether KDE or Gnome or something actually stores that away somewhere, they just expect it to work.

I want my file meta data and I want it now!
