At some point I want to update my aging (borrowed) CRT to an LCD and by looking at the prices and models available it seems like there is a huge gap between the 19" and 20" models price wise.

For instance, you can buy a nice 19" LCD for A$450 which sports a resolution of 1280x1024. But to get 1600x1200 which is what I use you have to jump up to a 20" (wow a WHOLE extra inch!) and pay around A$1300. The price gap seems highly artifical. The average user looking at a little bit more than a 19" LCD would go for a 20" if it cost $600-700. But $1300 is just unreasonable. Esp. since dell regularly discount their 24" model to A$1440, if only it came in silver ;).

So is there anything <A$1000 that does 1600x1200? (I'm not hopeful but I thought I'd try)

I find it amusing that most 19" CRT's do 1600x1200 in their sleep, whereas the LCD crowd never do it.

See viewsonic models. E.g. following is 20.1", UXGA, $779.00 (AU).

bah... three cheers for broken links in a post ;-)

Try Mitsubishi 20" A$999.

Bah to dell... I can't make a direct link for some reason.

Thanks Ed...

2 small things though... and I'm being picky I know... but 25ms? Thats so 2002... I think 16ms is a fair enough requirement these days.

Secondly:

  • PC Case: brushed aluminium: silver
  • Stereo: silver
  • Mac mini: silver
  • DV cam: silver

And there is no DV201S is there?

I have seen the 2005FPW (and sorry, but I fixed your link) for a little as A$880 during Dell sales periods. Currently there is not sale, but keep your eyes peeled and they'll do it again I'm sure.

But... it comes in any colour you want as long as it's black. However as long as it's $880 I shouldn't complain about the colour... beggars can't be choosers.

I actually think the 2001FP is better value than the 2005FPW, it seems anything with "widescreen" in it's name is more expensive for no real reason other than the "cool" factor.

Plus it just grates that the 2005FPW is missing a mere 30 scanlines for 1080p playback... horizontal resolution notwithstanding. With the 2001FP you get more pixels for less money.

But it IS cool :-)

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that the 2005FPW had a smaller vertical size. Vert resolution helps when viewing full page pdfs. All I need is for my 12" powerbook to be able to work with a rotated screen like the 15" and 17" models can!!!
